Fishery Manager's Review
After the cold winter, the weather conditions during the 2011 season were generally favourable. Although dry, the water released from Bewl maintained water levels though the depletion of the reservoir has raised concerns for 2012. We are keeping a watch on possible abstraction from the river and engage in discussion with both Southern Water and the EA on pumping strategies.
It was pleasing to see that many members were out on the river during October which, as I have commented on before, can often provide good levels of sport. Good numbers of trout were taken on dry and it is worth using this method even if rising fish are not in evidence.
Poaching during 2011 was not common. However, the team of bailiffs have made immense efforts to keep incidents down; combined with the various additional 'fortifications' we have put in place. During 2011 we also began to open up some of the more inaccessible, and therefore under-utilised, areas. We will continue with habitat improvement and fishery maintenance during the coming season. Prospects for 2012 look good and we have confirmed our order for high quality stock trout. The reservoir remains open throughout the winter and can provide sport if conditions are right, but members must be careful not to park on the muddy ground - stay on the hard standing. A further note about arrangements for 2012 and ways in which members can assist will follow in March.
River Invertebrate Survey
Recent sampling surveys have shown an improvement over 2010 when we saw a marked reduction in invertebrates in the Teise, producing the lowest numbers ever recorded since sampling began three years ago. It is unclear what caused this improvement. For example, in the November 2011 survey gammaridae, of which previously only 2-3 were seen per sample, have now shown 30-40, a very encouraging sign. The programme of sampling will continue through the coming season and a report will appear in the preseason newsletter.
Catch Returns
Would members who have not yet sent in their Catch Return to the Fishery Manager please do so as soon as possible. In future two Catch Returns will be provided to winter fishers. This will enable them to report their trout catch on time and their winter success as well.
Winter Fishing
Members are reminded that winter coarse fishing now extends up to and including the sewage works. Good catches of grayling have been reported. Members are reminded that fishing the reservoir is free and that it remains open throughout the year.
Pike Match
The annual Pike Match will be held on Saturday 18h February, meeting at Stonebridge at 10.00am. All appropriate fishing methods will apply and there will be prizes for the biggest bag and largest pike. Please come along. It is an opportunity for new members to get to know the river and meet other members and the Committee.
